Jay Hunter retired in 2019 as a Detective Sergeant in the Town of Clinton (NJ) Police Department after an over 26-year law enforcement career. During his career, he was responsible for the investigation of crimes ranging from theft to sexual assaults to death investigations. In addition to his investigative and general police duties, he was a member of the Clinton/Glen Gardner School District Safety Team. In that capacity, he was responsible for developing/implementing school security measures and training staff. 


Jay Hunter is a founding member of the Hunterdon County Special Weapons and Tactics Team, a collateral duty team. Since 1997, he rose through the ranks and positions on the Team ultimately becoming the Team Operations Officer. He implemented trainings in a way that combined tactical, medical, and negotiator elements in each training, allowing for greater team integration and coordinated efforts. In addition to SWAT duties, he developed and instituted training programs for local law enforcement, including pistol, patrol rifle, less lethal impact munitions, conducted energy devices and officer safety.


Jay Hunter retired as a Gunnery Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps Reserve in 2011. He had been member of the US Marine Corps and US Marine Corps Reserve since 1989. A Combat Veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom — Iraq three tours 2003, 2005 & 2008/2009, Operation Enduring Freedom — Horn of Africa 2002-2003, Operation Rapid Guardian — Kosovo 2002 and Operation Desert Shield/Storm- Kuwait/Saudi Arabia 1990-1991.


Awarded personal awards - Purple Heart Medal (x2), Navy Achievement Medal with "V' Valor Device, Navy Achievement Medal (x2), Navy Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Combat Action Ribbon (x2), Secretary of the Navy Letter of Commendation, Letter of Appreciation (x6), Meritorious Mast (x2).
